We begin water-safe swim instruction at 12 months but when is the right time for your family to start formal lessons?

When should my child begin lessons?

When to begin swim lessons is different for every family since every child is unique. Factors to keep in mind are your child's emotional maturity as well as their physical and developmental abilities and limitations.

Recent studies suggest that water survival skills training and swim lessons can help reduce drowning risk for children between ages 1-4.  In fact, a study conducted by America's National Institute of Health reveals that participating in formal swimming lessons is associated with an 88% rate to reduce the risk of drowning in children aged 1 to 4 years.

What does the American Academy of Pediatrics Recommend regarding infant and toddler swimming lessons?

The AAP recommends swim lessons as a layer of protection against drowning for all ages. However, according to their research, water-safe swim lessons can begin for many children starting at age 1 and there is currently no evidence that infant swim programs for babies under 1 year old lower their drowning risk. This is why our Sea Love Swim Parent / Tot lessons begin at 12 months old.

Why is swimming lessons for kids over 4 a must for most families?

What factors should parents look for in a quality swim program?

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that, "by a child's 4th birthday, most are ready for formal swim lessons. At this age, they usually can learn basic water survival skills such as floating, treading water and getting to an exit point. By age 5 or 6, most children in swim lessons can master the front crawl. If your child hasn't already started in a learn-to-swim program, now is the time!"
